A new Detroit newspaper, launched to fill the gap left in service delivery by the city’s two existing dailies, suspended publication in November after less than a week. Officially, the Detroit Daily Press is slated to resume in 2010 but questions surround those announced plans.

A statement posted December 3 on the paper’s Facebook page, which noted the absence of ad revenue, said: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, lack of advertising, lateness of our press runs and lack of distribution and sales, we find it necessary to temporarily suspend publication of the Detroit Daily Press until after the 1st of the year. Once we can fix these things, we plan to be back stronger and more organized when we return. This is just a bump in the road and not the end of the Detroit Daily Press.”

Publishers Mark and Gary Stern began by announcing they would charge one-quarter less for advertising and half for newsstand prices than their competitors. Weekday copies of the Daily Press were to be 50 cents and $1 on Sundays. Printing and distribution were to be outsourced to third parties.

Initial Expectation of Ability to Sustain New Paper

The staff consisted of former employees of other Detroit area newspapers, including former Detroit News assistant features editor Bruce McLaughlan. The paper was operating out of the one-time offices of the Daily Tribune in suburban Royal Oak, Michigan.

Previously, the Sterns had published daily newspapers in Detroit, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and New York at times during major newspaper strikes there.

“At their initial announcement this summer, the brothers said they had enough capital to float the Daily Press for two months, and needed 150,000 subscribers for the operation to break even,” Jim Rosenberg wrote in the November 13, 2009 Editor & Publisher in “Sterns to Launch ‘Detroit Daily Press’ This Month.”

The first issue, which had been planned for nearly six months, was November 23 with home delivery set to begin a week later. But instead the announcement came that the paper was suspending operations until next year.
