Compositional, lighting and access considerations determine the best area for focusing in sports photography. This limits the area of focus for the best overall result. There are two main strategies; manual pre focus and autofocus. Sports photographers use both, depending on the situation and their equipment’s capabilities.

Compositional and access requirements for sports photography often dictate a long focal length lens with wide apertures to accommodate high shutter speeds. This results in a shallow depth of field, making focus more critical than many other photographic genres. This shallow depth of fielded also assists composition by isolating the subject against a blurred out of focus background. This is useful in a busy arena to prevent the subjects being lost in a multicolored background.

Composition

This is important in sports as in any other photographic genre. Sports photographers do not need an autofocus system that tracks the subject all the time. Sports photographers often pre plan their shots for the action they expect based on their knowledge of the sport, taking into account lighting and available shooting spots. Considering the angles and the preferred focal length the result is a distance from the sports photographer to where the best action is likely to occur, and they choose the best focal length to frame the action at those spots. This gives the focus distance.
